Chef Bio

Chef Thomas Hughbanks

Montgomery County native, Executive Chef Thomas Hughbanks took an interest in cooking at a very young age, working in the kitchen with his mother and helping to prepare meals for the family. As he grew older, Chef Hughbanks realized that this love for cooking could reach far beyond a hobby and decided early on to pursue a career in the culinary arts.

With modest beginnings working as a dishwasher and prep cook at local, family-owned pizzerias and country inns in his hometown, Chef Hughbanks left home to pursue his Professional Cooking degree at Baltimore International College as soon as he could. A budding young chef with over 20 years of restaurant experience, he has shown off his culinary prowess at prestigious locations, such as, the historical Belvedere Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland as Executive Chef of the Owl Bar, the 13th Floor and their in-house catering company, Truffles.

In 2010, he began working as Executive Sous Chef of the Holiday Inn Washington-Dulles, one of the bustling flagships of the B.F. Saul Company properties. Since then, Chef Hughbanks has risen in the ranks and recently, in 2014, became Executive Chef of Holiday Inn Gaithersburg as well as the Holiday Inn Express located in Germantown, Maryland. Executive Chef Thomas Hughbanks serves up his creative menus for a variety of events from bar mitzvahs and weddings to craft beer and wine pairings.

There are many aspects of his job that makes it rewarding, although he uses his extensive experience to mentor his staff, Chef Hughbanks also enjoys learning from others, he says, “You should never be too old to learn. Developing new techniques and different flavors is the key to cultivating a whole dining experience for your guests.” Chef Hughbanks also enjoys working with various clients and having the freedom of creativity to constantly develop new flavor profiles and menus that will please any palate.

Chef Hughbanks takes much pride in being able to come home to Montgomery County and serve his community through the events at Holiday Inn. While, notable clients include the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Rotary Club of Montgomery County, as well as the Montgomery County Department of Health, he very much takes joy in seeing local members of the community gather and enjoy the meals he and his kitchen can provide them.
